ResumoFloodplains bordering large tropical rivers are very important to the fertility of the fluvial ecosystems and are under increasing influence from agricultural and hydroeletric developments. The central Amazon floodplain covers about 110,000 km2 and is a mosaic of open water, flooded forest, and floating plants. Knowledge of changes in the areal extent and ecological characteristics of the major habitats of the Amazon floodplain is largely lacking but is required for its understanding and management. We have used imagery from side-looking airborne radar, Landsat, and airborne video to examine environmental conditions and their change in a representative section of Amazon floodplain between its confluence with the Purus and Rio Negro Rivers. In this reach are 333 floodplain lakes with an area of about 560 km2. Landsat and video imagery obtained during the period of riverine inundation indicates the flow path of river water across the floodplain. While discrimination with Landsat of differences in phytoplanktonic chlorophyll concentrations are confounded by the high sestonic turbidity, floating macrophytes are distinguished readily with only minor confusion withupland pastures. Repeated, low-altitude overflights provided video images tha tracked seasonal changes in the areal extent of floating macrophytes. Digital and photographic Landsat products obtained for the period from 1973 to 1989 were used to document the accelerating deforestation in the uplands bordering the floodplain. These remotely sensed results extend in time and space information from a decade-long field study which has provided ground data to guide the analysis of the remotely sensed imagery.
